Electoral Register and casting your vote

You can vote an election in Weymouth and Portland Borough if you are 18 years old and included in the Electoral Register for this Authority. You must be included on the Electoral Register about 2 weeks before an election if you wish to vote.

Are you registered?

You can check if you are registered to vote by contacting our Election Service.

You can register for elections by completing a registration form.

Postal or Proxy Voting

If you are unable to attend a polling station on polling day, you may like to set up an absent vote.  Absent votes allow you to vote by post or to appoint somebody to vote on your behalf (which they can do either in person on polling day or by post).

Postal Voting

Postal votes can be sent either to your home address or an address away from home if you are studying, working away, or on holiday.  Postal votes can be arranged for either one election or permanently.

If you will be away whilst an election is taking place you must ensure that there will be enough time to receive, complete and return your postal vote before polling day.  Postal votes are sent out about 10 working days before an election.  If there is a concern that you will not be able to return your postal vote in time you should apply for a proxy vote.

Proxy Voting

Proxy votes enable somebody to vote on your behalf on polling day if you are unable to get to the polling station.  The person you appoint must be able to attend your normal polling station unless they apply for a postal-proxy vote.  Postal-proxy votes allow your appointed proxy to vote on your behalf by post.

You can apply for a proxy vote for one election day only unless you have a specific medical need attested by a healthcare professional, are working away and can get your application attested by your employer, are in education and can get your application attested by a tutor or similar.  The only exceptions to these rules are members of the British Armed Forces and their spouse/partner/civil partner.  For more information contact the Elections Service office.

  • Finding people using the Electoral Register

We often receive requests from members of the public trying to locate friends or relatives or to confirm the registration of people other than themselves. Although anybody has the right to view both the edited and full register it difficult to find an elector in the paper format without first knowing their address.
