Rewhead Farm, Buckland Newton

Excavation and construction of a compound to take the herd's production of slurry over the winter period.

The new slurry compound has been designed to take the winter's production of slurry from the dairy herd thereby significantly improving the existing containment facilities and reducing the risk of pollution.

It has also been sited to facilitate the management of the unit and cleaning of the yards and cubicle house when the cows are being milked.

The compound is built as far as possible in the ground with a capacity of some 2300m3.  Soil has been graded up to and along part of the exposed panels.  However the majority of the excavated ground soil has been spread on to one of the adjoining fields to improve the levels.  All graded ground will be reseeded and returned to pasture.

Improving the storage facilities will ensure the slurry is applied to the fields at the most beneficial time for the grasses to take up the valuable nutrients.

Completion date:  November 2011.
