Environment Agency and Dorset Coast Forum collaboration - 2009 - 2011

The Dorset Coast Forum (DCF) is working with the Environment Agency (EA) to deliver a program of projects that will enhance the involvement of local coastal and marine stakeholders in the decisions made for flood and coastal erosion management purposes.

Project one: The River Wey

This project was commissioned by the EA in recognition of the changing role they have with regard to taking an overview of flood and coastal risk management matters for locations such as Weymouth.

Project two: Preston beach maintenance leaflet and best practice guidance

This project looked at ways in which the Environment Agency can better communicate with local businesses and the public whilst beach maintenance works are being carried out. A Best practice guidance document (pdf, 341kb) (opens in a new window)  was produced as well as a leaflet (pdf, 945kb) (opens in a new window)  which the EA have adopted and now use when carrying out beach maintenance works on the Dorset coast.

Project three: Shoreline management plans leaflet

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council suggested to the EA that the DCF create a leaflet (pdf, 1Mb) (opens in a new window)  on shoreline management plans (SMP) to help Weymouth and Portland Borough Council elected members make an informed decision on whether the SMP should be adopted. The booklet explains what an SMP is, what they contain, and who is responsible for producing the plan. In addition, the booklet provides specific information on the SMP between Bowleaze cove to Chiswell.

Project four: Portland Harbour North shore coastal community project

The Dorset Coast Forum (DCF) has been commissioned by the EA and is working with Weymouth & Portland Borough Council to carry out a communications initiative with the local community within the general areas of Belle Vue Road, Redcliff View and Old Castle Road. With this project, DCF hope that residents will better understand:

  • The coastal processes at work along the North Shore of Portland Harbour

  • The differing levels of vulnerability for properties, caused by ground instability or mass movements

  • What are the coastal changes that are occurring now or likely to happen in the future and possible ways of adapting to these changes

  • The current national policies and local management strategies for this area

The DCF carried out a consultation, with a consultation leaflet (pdf, 14Mb) (opens in a new window) , to hear about any questions or concerns residents and businesses within the general areas of Belle Vue Road, Redcliff View and Old Castle Road had about the area in general or individual properties.

The DCF produced an informative booklet that is relevant to residents within the general areas of Belle Vue Road, Redcliff View and Old Castle Road, addressing the issues and/or concerns raised by local residents.
