Weymouth Young People's Union: MyPlace Project

In December 2009, Dorset County Council (DCC) secured an 'in-principal' grant of £3,056,240 from the 'myplace' funding programme to deliver the Weymouth Young People's Union (WYPU) project.

WYPU is an innovative, young people-led project that aims to deliver a wide range of leisure time activities that are safe, affordable, accessible, exciting, challenging, developmental and fun.

In addition, a broad spectrum of support services for young people, directed by the WYPU and delivered by a range of professionals and agencies, will be provided - meeting the needs of all young people, including those with specific and complex needs.

This transformation will be delivered by rebuilding STEPS Club for Young People and by upgrading and improving the nearby outdoor education centre.

The new youth facilities will be imaginative, exciting, multi-purpose and, above all, designed and co-managed by young people.

Young people have already led the project through the successful bidding stage and continue to be at the heart of the projects development.

The engagement of young people is an integral feature of the project.

Ultimately it is young people who will determine:

  • The building design at the new STEPS Club for Young People

  • The development of new facilities at Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre

  • And most importantly, the development of the new Weymouth Young People's Union

This will ensure that young people have the world-class facilities they deserve, the range of affordable activities they want and the support they need.
