Building notice

A Building Notice is generally suited to minor building work.

A Building Notice is generally suited to minor building work. If you use this method we may require further information such as structural calculations to ensure proposed work complies with Building Regulations (opens in a new window) .

The Building Notice procedure is suitable for:

  • Small, simple single-storey extensions

  • Installation of boilers or other heating appliances

  • New chimneys or flues

  • Replacement windows

  • Detached garages, carports or sheds not exempt from the regulations

  • Installation of a bathroom, shower or toilet

  • Insertion of insulation into cavity walls

  • Installation of drainage or connection to a sewer

  • Replacing roofing material

  • Internal structural alterations involving the removal of one or two walls

This method cannot be used for commercial buildings where the work would have fire safety implications. In these cases a Full Plans Application should be deposited.

The process

Please submit the application form and fee and let your council know when you intend to start work. Once you have informed your local authority you intend to start work we will carry out site inspections to make sure it meets the technical requirements of the regulations.

After the final inspection you will receive a Completion Certificate will be issued.
