Core Strategy
The Core Strategy is one of the most important documents in the Local Development Framework. It sets out the general spatial vision and objectives for the LDF. All other Local Development Plan Documents have to conform to the Core Strategy.
The council started work on its Core Strategy with consultation on the development of issues and alternative options early 2007. An initial consultation workshop took place in January with representatives of town and parish councils, Local Area Partnerships, West Dorset Partnership and a range of public organisations and experts on a range of topics. Officers from the district council's Planning Policy section have also held a youth consultation day. They also attended meetings with older people's forums and disability forums to provide the groups with the chance to comment on what they thought were important issues in West Dorset. Please read

for further information.
A wider consultation was then undertaken with the publication of the Issues and Options consultation paper and questionnaire. This highlighted the opinions of the general public and stakeholders. This consultation closed on 28 September 2007.
Consultation took place on a number of options for growth on land around Weymouth in West Dorset from 10 June to 5 August 2009. The next stage of consultation planned was on preferred options for the Core Strategy.
However, work on the Core Strategy has halted in order to pilot a New Planning System.
