East Dorset Council Tax - how to pay

We provide the following ways to pay your council tax.

Your bill indicates your method of payment. Your Council Tax Reference number is on your annual bill and consists of 9 digits, starting with a 1.

Payments may be made monthly, half yearly, quarterly (by Direct Debit) or annually as follows:

Direct Debit on the 1st, 15th, 20th or 25th day of each month

This is the most cost effective method of payment and is recommended by the council and your Bank/Building Society.  If you would like to pay by Direct Debit please complete and return the instructions enclosed with your bill or download the form below.

  • You may print a Direct Debit form (pdf, 252kb) (opens in a new window)   to complete and return to us
  • We can take your details over the telephone during normal office hours - please phone 01202 639150
  • There are no cheques to write, no cash to deal with and no ongoing paperwork because payments are made for you by your bank or building society
  • You will always remain in control of your payments, as we will notify you at least ten working days before any change to your payments
  • You are guaranteed a full and immediate refund by your bank in the unlikely event of an error

Information to note

Unless you elect to pay by Direct Debit, payments are due on the 1st of each month as detailed on your bill.

The council offers a choice of payment dates for payment of council tax by direct debit: the 1st, 15th, 20th or 25th day of each month.

Payments must be made in accordance with your council tax bill. In the event of late payment, a reminder notice may be issued. Legislation allows for a maximum of only two reminders to be issued in any financial year. After this, the remaining balance for the year becomes payable in full.
