What Dorset Highways does

What does Dorset Highways do?

As the highway authority for Dorset (not including Bournemouth and Poole), we are responsible for maintaining roads, streets and pavements except those managed by the Highways Agency.

We manage traffic and work to reduce accidents on our roads through physical improvements and road safety education.

We support public transport services and promote sustainable types of travel, such as cycling and walking.

Together with Bournemouth Borough Council and the Borough of Poole, we develop a five-year Local Transport Plan to attract Government funding for all forms of transport in Dorset.

Dorset Highways can also provide a range of services for clients, ranging from engineering design and advice to vehicle MOTs to tree surgery.

Part of the county council's Environment directorate, Dorset Highways is made up of Highways Management, which plans, designs and manages highway and transport schemes and services, and Highways Operations, which carries out maintenance and construction work and manages parking and public transport.

We are based between County Hall and Charminster Depot in Dorchester and other local depots around Dorset.

• Sign manufacture and maintenance

  Dorset Highways offer a full design, manufacture and installation service for all the signing needs of the county as well as for the general public at our modern and well equipped workshop, based at the Charminster repair depot.

• Road and pavement maintenance

  Dorset Highways undertake both routine and structural maintenance to ensure the pavements and roads of Dorset remain in a safe and usable condition.

• Grounds services

  Dorset Highways grounds services division undertakes a range of grounds maintenance work for both Dorset County Council (DCC) and for commercial customers.

• Vehicle maintenance and MOTs

  Dorset Highways offer a range of vehicle maintenance and MOTs both commercially to customers and also for Dorset County Council (DCC).

• Recycling and waste management

  Highways Operations recognises the need to operate efficiently to help overcome the climate change battle.
