Community projects

The Dorset History Centre has supported and worked with many groups and societies on projects which promote local history or heritage, or help preserve the memories and experiences of Dorset people for the future.

Oral history

We can offer advice on running oral history projects and ensuring that any recordings you make will continue to be accessible for years to come.

Some general tips on running an oral history project are:

  • Ensure that participants are aware of how the recordings will be used in the future. Any interviewees should sign a declaration stating that they are happy for the recordings of their interview to be made available

  • Create a document (or set of documents) detailing what is in each recording - ideally a full transcript of what is said, but at the very least a summary of the main topics discussed in each interview

  • Avoid obsolete or obscure technologies and formats when making recordings. As analogue recorders (i.e. recorders using some form of cassette or tape) are becoming increasingly outdated and unsupported, it is best to record in a digital format. As far as possible stick to non-proprietary file formats (i.e. not a 'branded' product, but formats that can be run on most or all computers using widely available software) - so ideally sound files like WAV, or video files in an MPEG format

The History Centre will usually be happy to accept oral history recordings for permanent preservation, so long as the content of recordings relates wholly or substantially to Dorset, and their is appropriate accompanying documentation.

Community archives

If your group or organisation has its own archive, or is in the process of collecting material for an archive, we can offer advice on how to care for your collection, or how to make it more accessible.

You might like to consider placing records on deposit here at the History Centre, where they will benefit from specialist storage facilities and expert care from professional staff. Documents can be placed on long-term loan, which means the collection is stored and cared for here whilst the depositor retains ownership and control of reproduction rights etc.

Research projects

If you are interested in researching the history of your local area as a group project, we can provide advice and support, including group induction sessions on how to use the History Centre and the sources available.

Fayres, displays and other events

We can support local events with a focus on history or heritage by providing display panels or information leaflets relating to the History Centre's collections and services. Our collections may also contain images or other documents relating to your local area which can form the basis of displays. You can search our collections through our online catalogue, or see selected examples of some our more impressive images through Dorset Pictures Online.
