Talks and group visits

The Dorset History Centre offers a variety of talks, as well as guided tours of our facilities, including a chance to go 'behind the scenes'.

Subjects

We offer talks on a range of topics, including a general introduction to the History Centre and its work. We do not offer talks on specific towns or villages, though we can normally include selected documents relating to your area of interest if you book a visit to the History Centre.

Venues

Talks here at the History Centre will feature a tour of the building, a chance to see 'behind the scenes', and an opportunity to view selected documents from our collections (including, where possible, documents relating to the town, village or subject of interest to your group). These sessions will typically last between one-and-a-half and two hours. We can normally accommodate up to around 20 people in one session.

Talks at outside venues are normally delivered as Microsoft Powerpoint presentations (i.e. with a computer and digital projector), and typically last around 40-50 minutes.

Cost

For sessions at the History Centre, we charge £3-50 per attendee, with a minimum fee of £50-00 for the session.

For talks at outside venues, we charge £50-00 for the session, plus travelling expenses.

Times

Sessions can take place on weekdays (preferably Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays) during working hours (9am-5pm) or in the evenings.

Booking

Please contact the Outreach and Communities Officer to arrange a talk or group visit.

Please book well in advance to avoid disappointment - there are only a limited number of staff who deliver our talks and tours, and for on-site visits our lecture room can often be in heavy demand.

If you are not a member a group or society, but would like to take attend one of our talks and tours, please contact us. We may be able to arrange for you to come along at the same time as another group, include you on our waiting list or let you know about other relevant talks and events.
