Domestic Violence Awareness Training
Multi agency domestic violence awareness training is available in Dorset in June 2012.
Course Aims:
This half-day awareness course aims to:
- Develop a better understanding of domestic violence in all agencies
- Raise awareness of the impact of domestic violence
- Look at how we respond to those experiencing domestic violence
- Present the role of different agencies in relation to domestic violence
- Provide information on where support and help can be obtained for victims
- Raise standards of practice
Participants should note that the course aims to raise general awareness of domestic violence and will not cover specialist issues such as substance misuse, children, mental health, men as victims, working with perpetrators or vulnerable adults in detail.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of domestic violence and its impact on victims and children
- Demonstrate knowledge of the extent of domestic violence both nationally and in Dorset
- Identify the support available to victims including refuges, outreach projects, the police, health service, the criminal justice system and housing
- Identify what needs to be done to ensure an effective inter agency response to domestic violence including effective signposting to support organisations
Style:
The course will be delivered by Nicola Pengelly, Domestic Violence Strategic Coordinator. It will be interactive with opportunities for attendees to participate in group work, exercises and discussions.
Duration:
Half day 9.30 to 12.30
Number of Places:
Places on each course will be limited to 30 and it is anticipated that demand will be high. Priority will therefore be given to practitioners providing a service to victims based in the Dorset County Council area.
Cost:
Attendance is free for all agencies. There will be a £25 cancellation fee charged for non-attendance on the day having accepted a place on the course.
Who Should Attend:
This course is intended for practitioners who have little or no knowledge of domestic violence and who want to learn more. The training is intended for any practitioners who come into contact with the victims of domestic violence as part of their daily work and will be of particular interest to police officers, social workers, health visitors and other health professionals (including GPs, dentists, midwives and pharmacists), teachers, solicitors, housing officers, anyone working in the voluntary sector, those working with children and those working in drugs and alcohol support agencies.
You should not attend if you have completed a domestic violence awareness course in the last two years. The training is also not intended for senior managers or those practitioners who already have detailed knowledge of domestic violence through their work or previous training.
Half day courses running from 9.30-12.30 will be available on the following dates:
Thursday 21 June in Wimborne
Tuesday 26 June in Dorchester
On the same dates, Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) Training will be running in the afternoon. Attendance on the awareness course is a pre-requisite for the MARAC training. If you'd like to attend one of the courses please complete the
