County Psychological Service (CPS)
Educational psychologists work with families, schools and other members of the children's workforce to address the five outcomes of Every Child Matters (ECM).
What does the service offer?
The CPS offers a consultation model of service delivery.
Educational Psychologists (EPs) work together in partnership with schools other agencies and families to identify and address the specific requirements of children in their current placement.
The CPS recognises the importance of involving parents and building parental confidence in the SEN support structures and therefore encourages parental participation at every stage.
EPs prioritise children/young people (c/yp)
According to the level and complexity of their specific requirements
To ensure the specific requirements of c/yp continue to be met at the lowest level of specialist provision
The Core work of Educational Psychologists includes:
Working in partnership with schools and other professionals to address the specific requirements of vulnerable children and to support their current educational placement
Working with schools and their systems to foster emotionally healthy and supportive environments
The provision of Psychological Advice to the Local Authority
Critical Incident Support
Training for school staff and other professionals working within the community
Participation in strategic local authority development groups
How do I access the service?
Requests for EP involvement will usually arise from the school and family working together and deciding that the involvement of the Educational Psychologist would be helpful. The school will then discuss the child or young person's specific requirements at the next planning meeting with the EP. If a formal piece of work is agreed between the school and the EP the school and the parent/carer will be asked to complete "The Initial Information and Permissions sheet". If concerns regarding the progress of a child are expressed from outside of the school then this will be taken by the EP to the next school planning meeting so that prioritisation can take place following discussion with the school.
