Evidence base and other documents

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council has put together a range of information to inform the preparation of its emerging Local Development Framework (LDF).

The Local Development Framework (LDF) process requires planning policies to be based on a thorough understanding of the needs, opportunities and constraints within the borough. Local planning authorities are required to prepare and maintain an up-to-date information base on key aspects of the social, economic and environmental characteristics of their area.

All LDF documents should be based on sound, robust and credible evidence. It will be this question of 'soundness' which will be central to their examination by an independent inspector. Evidence takes the form of survey work, strategies, appraisals and assessments. Much of the evidence base has been prepared in-house, however, where appropriate other pieces of work have been prepared jointly with neighbouring local authorities in Dorset.

  • Weymouth & Portland Core Strategy - Issues Papers

The borough council has prepared a number of issues papers which provide background information in support of the Local Development Framework (LDF) Core Strategy. These issues papers draw information from the studies in the LDF evidence base and identify the main issues and distinctive characteristics of the borough.

  • Weymouth & Portland Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA)

As part of a government-led Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA), councils are being asked to assess the amount of land available for housing development in England.

  • Weymouth & Portland Conference Findings

Conferences and seminars provide useful forums for user groups and stakeholders to engage effectively and identify issues and actions. The findings of two conferences have been used in the evidence base for the emerging Local Development Framework (LDF).

  • Weymouth & Portland Open Space, Sport and Recreation Facilities Assessment

The Planning Policy Guidance (PPG) 17 assessment for open space, sport and recreation facilities helps to set out a vision over the next ten years for the Borough Council and its partners in relation to the provision and improvement of open space, sport and recreation provision in Weymouth and Portland.

  • Weymouth & Portland Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

The Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) is an overview of flood risk within a specific area and aims to provide general guidance to local authority planners, developers and other interested people, including the general public about locations where flood risk is an issue. The information in the SFRA will help to guide Weymouth & Portland Borough Council in making judgements on allocating land through the planning process.

  • Weymouth Flood Risk Management Strategy

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council and the Environment Agency commissioned a Flood Risk Management Strategy in 2009 to investigate the flood risk management measures that are required now and in the future.
