Grounds services

Dorset Highways grounds services division undertakes a range of grounds maintenance work for both Dorset County Council (DCC) and for commercial customers.

Grounds Services maintains over 140 schools in Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole. The division is also responsible for the maintenance of highway verges and weed control. Here is a list of activities we offer in relation to sports fields maintenance and construction:

  • Mowing to suit your requirements
  • Markings - pitch, sports and track
  • Fertilizers and herbicides applied
  • Drainage installed and renovated
  • Aeration and de compaction
  • Erection of sports goals
  • Natural grass pitches constructed and maintained
  • Artificial pitches installed/maintained
  • Litter collection
  • Cricket squares constructed/maintained

Maintenance of hard and soft landscaped areas including:

  • Maintaining hedges
  • Maintaining flower beds
  • Maintaining shrub beds (including mulching using material produced by the arboricultural team)
  • Applying fertilizers and herbicides
  • Routine maintenance of young and semi-mature trees (see section on 'Tree maintenance')
  • Litter collection
  • Winter maintenance service

    Verge cutting and maintenance is undertaken to maintain safety, by providing a refuge for pedestrians in the absence of footways, to prevent obstruction of sight lines and traffic signs, to maintain a tidy appearance to minimise encroachment onto the carriageway or footway.

    Highways Operations grounds services division undertakes many exciting landscape projects each year which enhance facilities for many schools, homes for the elderly and customer's property.

    The arboricultural section of Dorset Highways grounds services division manages the county council's tree stock. The service will also undertake similar work for commercial customers.
