Harbours in West Dorset

Lyme Regis harbour

There are two harbours in West Dorset - Bridport (West Bay) and Lyme Regis. Both are owned and operated by West Dorset District Council.

Both harbours have a long history of use but no longer accept commercial cargo vessels.

They both have a small fishing fleet and commercial tripping boats but are mainly used in the summer by leisure craft. The tripping boats offer sightseeing, fishing and diving trips. The council requires these tripping boats to have a 'ply for hire licence' to allow them to operate from the harbour. Licences are issued on receipt of a fee and confirmation that the boat has a Small Commercial Vessel Certificate and valid insurance.

There are moorings within the harbours that dry out and are let on an annual basis. There is a large waiting list for mooring for both harbours.

There is a slipway for public use with space for boat trailers at both harbours.

Visiting craft are welcome.

The district council has a Marine Operations Plan covering both harbours. This plan was drawn up to comply with the Port Marine Safety Code.
