The main role of the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) is to support the progress of minority ethnic pupils in schools.

This includes pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL), or who are of other minority ethnic/mixed race origin and are currently under-achieving.

There has been a substantial increase in the number of minority ethnic pupils within the county over recent years.

The service offers a range of services to schools, including assessment of language skills for new arrivals, staff training, home-school liaison, translation and interpretation to help with communication between home and school, advice and guidance on effective teaching strategies and developing race equality through the curriculum, handling racist incidents in school.

The service is part of the Inclusion Service in the Children's Services Directorate and has close links with other agencies and staff in the directorate in monitoring the educational achievement of minority ethnic children in Dorset schools.
