Looked after children

Child on see-saw

There are approximately 180 school age children in Dorset who are 'looked after' by the local authority (referred to by the DfES as Children in public care).

A "looked after" child is a young person who is cared for by the local authority (in Dorset by Children's Services Directorate), the majority by voluntary agreement with, or at the request of parents, who retain full parental authority, some by a court order. Many "looked after" children have had/are experiencing a troubled childhood through no fault of their own.

Whenever possible there is a carefully planned return to the family home. This group of young people is now the focus on new initiatives, both locally and nationally, in order to help address low achievement, low self-esteem and educational and social needs.

As part of the "corporate" parent, governors, elected councillors, schools, carers, social workers, parents and the county's education co-ordinator need to work together and be fully aware of their responsibilities.
