Municipal waste strategy

Everyone produces rubbish and how we deal with it now and in years to come is a significant challenge.

Times are changing - climate change, energy use and sustainable development are big issues and waste management has an important part to play.  Waste issues have changed hugely in recent years - new landfill targets and fines could cost the taxpayer millions.  Waste is a valuable resource and not a disposal problem - new and emerging technology is cleaner than ever before and can produce energy or other products.

Seven councils in Dorset county area are responsible for the management of municipal waste. These are Christchurch Borough Council, Dorset County Council, East Dorset District Council, North Dorset District Council, Purbeck District Council, West Dorset District Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

In June 2009 the councils published a new  Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy for Dorset [678kb] (opens in a new window)  that will guide the way they deal with waste over the next 25 years.

The following pages contain more information about the future of waste management in Dorset. These include the new waste strategy, plus more about a project to develop a waste treatment plant in the county.
