Grove Copse

Flower

Grove Copse is a small nature reserve that is situated to the west of Christchurch Borough, within the St. Catherine's Ward. The area is comprised mainly of mature oak woodland habitat, with an understorey of hazel, birch and holly. Rhododendron, previously dominating has been gradually removed from the site.

The site itself is part of the former grounds of Grove Farm. The farmhouse still exists as a private residence next to the site. This site has historically been referred to as 'Bluebell Wood' although there are only small patches of bluebells present today. Despite the small size, the site is an important oasis for local wildlife, particularly woodland birds and is managed with the aim of maintaining and improving it as a wildlife habitat. The rhododendron under storey is being gradually removed to make way for native species, some of which will be coppiced with the aim of increasing the diversity of woodland fauna and flora.
