Paints and oils

How should I dispose of paint, car oil and cooking oil?

Paint

If paint has completely solidified, it can be disposed of in the normal refuse collection.

With unwanted water-based paints, the lid can be left off the tin in a well-ventilated space and the paint allowed to solidify.

Where paint is still runny, it can be taken to any household recycling centre.

Car engine oil

Used engine oil can be deposited in the oil bank at any household recycling centre. The oil is taken away for proper recovery.

More information on waste oil and local recycling points can be obtained from the Environment Agency's (opens in a new window) 'Oil Care Helpline' on 0800 66 33 66.

Cooking oil

There are no facilities for recycling household cooking oil. Small quantities should be soaked up into kitchen towel and put in the normal refuse collection. Larger quantities can cause problems by leaking from the dustcart. These should only be put in the normal refuse collection if contained in a lidded plastic fizzy drinks bottle (these will not burst in the dustcart). Alternatively it can be poured into a container and taken to any household recycling centre and put in the general refuse skip. Restaurants and other private companies should contact us.
