Domestic waste collection in Christchurch
We collect domestic waste from around 23,000 properties in Christchurch every week. The waste is taken to a landfill site at Ringwood. Christchurch currently sends approximately 210 tonnes to this site every week.
It is the responsibility of the householder to ensure the refuse is bagged securely. If you have a wheelie bin, rubbish must be bagged up before it is placed in the wheelie bin and removed from the bin by the householder prior to refuse collection. The refuse vehicles do not have lifting equipment so the refuse is manually lifted by the operatives. Under manual handling legislation it is not possible for them to lift refuse from wheelie bins.
If you have broken glass or ceramics you wish to dispose of, please ensure that they are safely and securely wrapped, marked with "Broken Glass" or similar and left on top of the bin or bags. Please remember the refuse is your responsibility until the collectors have collected it.
Weekly refuse collection
Please see the documents to the right to see what days refuse is collected in your street.
If refuse bags are split by animals, you are responsible for clearing it up. If the contractor spills the refuse whilst carrying the bags and disposing of them, they should ensure all rubbish is removed.
Your refuse will not be collected if:
• It is found that you are a business
• You are placing garden waste in your bags
• Your bin is defective or it is dangerous for the operator to move
• If an animal is loose in the garden
Has your refuse been missed?
We endeavour to provide an efficient service, however sometimes things can go wrong. If your refuse has been missed and the contractor does not leave a green refuse card explaining why, please telephone our Missed Bin Hotline on (01202) 495000. If you notify us of missed refuse before 12 noon it will be collected on the same working day. Missed refuse reported after 12 noon will be collected the following working day. If you wish to report missed refuse, please use the contact details shown at the bottom of this page.
Bank Holiday collection arrangements
On most Bank Holidays collection will be as normal. However at Christmas this may not be the case, depending on the availability of disposal sites.
