Christchurch - boat moorings
Christchurch Borough Council leases the whole of the lower harbour. The mooring facilities are as follows.
Trot moorings on south-east side of the harbour
61 moorings are maintained by us of which eight are suitable for boats up to 30 foot and the remainder for boats up to 25 foot. These moorings have reasonable shelter under Hengistbury Head, but there is no vehicle access on this side of the harbour. There is a small annual turnover on these moorings.
Self-laid moorings at Mudeford in the north-eastern part of the harbour
There are up to 100 licences issued annually for self-laid moorings in this area. There are car parking facilities and a slipway on Mudeford Quay but the whole area dries at low water. Because of this, boats drawing more than 2 foot 6 inches are restricted. There is a considerable annual turnover and allocations are made on a first come, first served basis.
Some useful points about moorings:
- Moorings are let on an annual basis from 1 December. Accounts for the new season are sent out for payment by 1 December
- No reduction will be made for anyone taking over a mooring late in the season
- The council has no bankside moorings in any of the mooring areas
- Buoyage within the harbour and at the harbour entrance is provided by the Christchurch Harbour Association. A small levy of £8.50 is added to each mooring fee and passed on to the association to cover this cost
- All mooring re-lets are arranged by the administrator who will arrange appointments with prospective mooring holders as necessary

Applying for a mooring
If you wish to apply for one of our moorings you will need to apply to the council and give details of your boat. Our moorings officer will contact you to discuss your boat details and mooring prices. Once we have ascertained that your boat is suitable for either a Mudeford mooring (self-laid) or Hengistbury Head (trot) mooring (buoyed), provided there is a vacancy, you will be offered a mooring. The mooring year runs from 1 December to 15 November in any year.
The same system applies to Mudeford Quay dinghy park, where there are 238 dinghy berths, the season is from 1 November to 16 October in each year.
