Sustainable Communities Act 2007

The Sustainable Communities Act sets up a new process where local communities and their local authorities (district, county and unitary councils) can guide policy and action to promote local sustainability and reverse community decline by proposing changes in legislation or budgets that currently only central government can influence.

To find out more about the Act see What is the Sustainable Communities Act?

You can view the proposals submitted by Dorset communities to the local authorities.

Seven Proposals were submitted across Dorset to the Local Government Association in July.

What happens next?

We have received the following timescale from the Local Government Association:

  • LGA officer appraisal of proposals August – October 09
  • LGA Selector Panel consideration of proposals and short-listing September –  November 09
  • Submission of proposals to Secretary of State – December 09

We understand that there will be an evaluation of the process before any further invitations for local authorities to submit proposals is issued.
