30/09/09: Work starts on first relief road roundabout

Work to build a new Manor Roundabout for the Weymouth Relief Road is getting underway.

On Monday 5 October work will start to install the temporary road layout [2Mb] (opens in a new window) that will ensure motorists are not disrupted by the construction of the new Weymouth Relief Road Manor Roundabout.

All of the traffic islands will be removed and a temporary smaller roundabout will be constructed on the Weymouth Way side of the existing central island.

Current road markings will be blacked-out and the new layout will be painted onto the road.

With traffic diverted onto the new layout, the works area will be safely fenced off and the walkway on the Morrisons side of the roundabout will be realigned around the outside of the site. The paths and subway on the other side of the road will not be affected.

Manor Roundabout will then be removed and reconstructed. It will be a bit bigger and slightly higher on the railway side, as the relief road will slope gently up to clear the railway line.

Dorset County Council Head of Highways Andy Ackerman said:

"We've done our utmost to plan the work on Manor Roundabout so that it doesn't disrupt motorists.

"Some of the work to install the temporary layout will be done at night and during the day traffic lights shouldn't be needed and stop/go boards will only be used where absolutely necessary."

It will take two weeks for the temporary road layout to be installed and between 12 and 14 weeks for the new Manor Roundabout to be built, which will be opened to traffic once the relief road is finished.
