Stanpit Marsh New Dog Control Order
Details of new Dog Control Order (Dogs on Leads) for Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve
The public consultation period regarding a proposed Dog Control Order for Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve is now over. Following the extensive consultation, Christchurch Council has decided that all dogs must be kept on a lead when on Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve, effective from 1 October 2010.
Following an introductory period to help people become familiar with the new rule, the
Stanpit Marsh Dogs on Leads Order [1Mb] (opens in a new window) will come into force on Friday 1 October this year.
Please note that dogs will still be welcome on the reserve after this date, but they must be kept on a lead no longer than 3 metres, at all times.
The Recreation Ground is unaffected by the new control order – dogs may still run freely off a lead on this adjoining site.
The Council wishes to thank everyone who responded to the consultation. Information about the consultation and the reasons for the change to the rules for the nature reserve remain available from the downloads featured on this page.
The current by-laws for the nature reserve were written in the 1970s. Since then the Marsh has become much busier and wildlife has come under pressure from a number of factors. The new order strengthens these by-laws and requires dogs to be kept on a lead within the nature reserve at all times.
