Results of the Great Dorset Beach Clean 2010
A Great Haul for the Great Dorset Beach Clean 2010.
What a fabulous day for everyone attending the Great Dorset Beach Clean on Sunday 18th April!
The sun was blazing and everyone was in high spirits. Reports came in that all who were involved enjoyed the experience and we even had emails from volunteers saying that they are keen to organise their own group to clean their local beaches more regularly.
A huge thank you goes to our 793 volunteers, 120 of which were children, who arrived on the day to pick up a magnificent 802 and a half bags from 25 beaches along the Dorset Coast.
Amongst a vast amount of waste, plastic was the usual culprit and top of most beach's lists, closely followed by polystyrene.
Odd items included:
Tyres
Old shoes
Rope
Fishing line
Articles of clothing
This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes most of the Jurassic World Heritage Site, so it is a very special area of coastline.
Organised by Dorset County Council's Coastal Ranger Team and supported by a host of organisations and individuals, this year has provided Dorset's Jurassic Coast with a thorough spring clean. It increases awareness of the ongoing problem of coastal rubbish pollution and encourages people to get involved with safeguarding Dorset's unique coastal environment for future generations.
