Landlord accreditation scheme

We have specific duties to ensure minimum standards are maintained in privately tenanted properties. As an alternative to formal action all councils across Dorset operate Accreditation Schemes to recognise landlords who provide good quality accommodation to rent.

Councils across Dorset operate Landlord Accreditation Schemes as part of a county-wide initiative. The scheme consists of a set of standards or codes relating to the management and physical condition of rented accommodation. Landlords who join the scheme and abide by the standards are "accredited" and may enjoy a list of benefits including grant assistance.

Such closer, partnership working, rather than a formal enforcement approach, is our preferred method of working with landlords.

Our Landlord Accreditation Schemes operate across Dorset, and have been developed with the National Landlords Association and local landlords. These are voluntary schemes that landlords can join. The aim is to recognise landlords who provide good quality rented accommodation, improve liaison and communication between landlords and councils and promote good practice in the rented sector.

In some areas of the county accredited landlords can put forward their own tenants for accreditation.
