West Dorset landscape character assessment

In 2007/08 the district council, working in partnership with the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team, carried out an extensive survey of the West Dorset countryside. This was done to provide an up-to-date landscape character assessment and planning and landscape management guidelines for the whole district.

The  Landscape Character Assessment February 2009 (pdf, 8Mb) (opens in a new window) identified 14 different landscape types in West Dorset and 35 unique character areas, using the most up-to-date methods promoted by Natural England. The assessment was based on desk study research and field survey work, with input from specialist and local stakeholder organisations, such as town and parish councils, as well as local residents.

The planning guidelines have been adopted by the council (3 February 2009), replacing West Dorset 2000, as part of the design and sustainable development supplementary planning document (SPD). Each area assessment includes a location plan, a brief description of the various elements and how they contribute to the distinctive character of the area, and a list of key landscape characteristics and detrimental features.

The land management guidelines are being finalised, with guidance for areas within the Dorset Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This work has helped inform the review of the  AONB Management Plan (opens in a new window)  and will help in the review of the Framework for Action in the Countryside 2004-2009. These documents identify priority land management actions in the district, which in turn are referred to when considering projects and their eligibility for grant funding under the Conservation and Community Planning Grant Scheme.
