Minerals Core Strategy

Front cover of the revised draft minerals core strategy

The Minerals Core Strategy (MCS) is a plan setting out a vision, objectives and proposed policies for meeting Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole's mineral requirements.

The MCS sets out a strategy for quarrying stone, sand and gravel, ball clay and other minerals within the county, taking into account the need to contribute to national, regional and local requirements in a sustainable manner.

Consultation

The formal consultation period has now closed, however you can still view the Minerals Core Strategy, as well as the comments made by different people and organisations, on our consultation portal (opens in a new window) .

Supporting documents, including a sustainability appraisal and a series of background papers can also be viewed on the Minerals and waste consultation portal (opens in a new window)  .

Minerals Roadshows

To ensure communities are aware of the proposals contained in the Revised Draft Minerals Core Strategy, we undertook a number of roadshows during September and October at locations close to where mineral resources exist to give people the opportunity to find out more about quarrying and how decisions are made about the locations for future quarries.

Changes since the previous consultation

Since the last consultation period, held at the end of 2010, some significant changes have been made to the Minerals Core Strategy.

Some of the main areas that the revised plan has developed are:

  • A revised set of key issues reflecting more specifically the crucial mineral related, Dorset specific, issues that the strategy needs to address
  • A spatial strategy for ball clay, including areas of search, and for sand and gravel, including the identification of resource areas
  • The identification of areas of opportunity for mining of Portland Stone
  • A positive approach to promoting aggregates recycling
  • A strengthened evidence base through working closely with the minerals industry and other specialist stakeholders and through a number of specific studies
