Replacing Mountjoy School

In July 2008, Dorset County Council's Cabinet gave the go-ahead for new options for the replacement special school to be developed as soon as possible, with full public consultation as part of the process. A proposal has now been put forward.

Following consultation by the local authority to re-build and relocate Mountjoy Special School to a suitable site in West Dorset, the local authority has decided to proceed with the following proposal:

Notice is given in accordance with section 19(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 that Dorset County Council, as local authority, intends to make a prescribed alteration to Mountjoy Community Special School, Flood Lane, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 3QG from 1 September 2011.

It is proposed to replace the Mountjoy Special School premises currently located in Bridport, West Dorset, with new premises to be provided on the Beaminster Technology College site in West Dorset as a co-located special school, with access provided from Tunnel Road, Beaminster.  The school currently caters for about 43 3-19 year olds and the proposed rebuild will maintain this provision through providing for 48 3-19 year olds.

It is intended that the new school will continue to make provision for the same type(s) of special educational needs, moderate learning difficulty, severe learning difficulty and profound and multiple learning difficulty, as the existing school.

The new school premises will be co-located on the site of Beaminster Technology College, Newtown, Beaminster, Dorset, DT8 3EP.
