The Coalition Government has promised to radically reform the planning system to give local people far more ability to determine the shape of the places in which they live and work.

The  Localism Act 2011 (opens in a new window) introduces Neighbourhood Plans, Neighbourhood Development Orders and Community Right to Build Orders. These neighbourhood planning tools sit within the existing framework of national planning policy and the Local Plan.

National planning policy

The Government are committed to streamlining the national planning policy and replacing the 1000's of pages of policy guidance and statements with one single document. The government published the  National Planning Policy Framework (opens in a new window) (NPPF) on the 27 March 2012.

  • Neighbourhood Planning

The Localism Act introduces a new right for communities to draw up a Neighbourhood Plan. The Government thinks that local communities should have genuine opportunities to influence the future of the places where they live and work.
