Reorganisation of Purbeck Schools

A review of educational provision in the Purbeck area has been taking place over the last couple of years. The key purpose has been to create a school system which is more efficient, effective and fit for purpose, enabling all children and young people to achieve high standards. Following a lengthy consultation period and adjudication, the decision has been made to move the area from the existing three tier system (first/middle/upper) to a two tier system (primary/secondary).

Update on progress

Officers have been working with heads and chairs of governors to help ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. The summer newsletter (pdf, 308kb) (opens in a new window)  highlights recent developments. Further information can be found by following the links below where additional resources have recently been added.

The schools will start to change in September 2012 when first schools will retain pupils going into year five. The middle schools will operate with three year groups rather than the usual four. In September 2013, the first schools will retain pupils going into year six, the middle schools will close and the current upper school will become an 11-18 secondary school. The table (pdf, 10kb) (opens in a new window)  gives further details on the effect for each year group. As part of the proposals, there will now be significant investment in the expanding schools across the area.
