The 'recycle for Dorset' service - coming March 2014
The Dorset Waste Partnership is introducing a single recycling and rubbish collection service, called recycle for Dorset, across the county. The service will start for Purbeck residents in March 2014. You will receive information about the new service through the post in August 2013, when you will have a chance to request exceptions to the standard service to meet your household's needs. You will continue using the current scheme explained below until the week before the new service starts.
Recycling and rubbish collections in Purbeck
Purbeck households receive an alternate-week collection, known as 'Recycle for Purbeck'. Kerbside recycling is collected one week followed by rubbish that cannot be recycled the next week:
Week 1 - Green box for recycling
Week 2 - Wheeled bin for rubbish that cannot be readily recycled
All households have been issued with a green, 55-litre box for their recycling. The majority of households have also been provided with a 240-litre wheeled bin to use for any waste that cannot be recycled.
Before the scheme commenced residents received a comprehensive leaflet explaining how the 'Recycle for Purbeck' scheme works. There is a helpline number for any queries (01929 557279).

How to avoid attracting flies to your bin
Your bin can be a food source and breeding ground for flies, but there are many things you can do to help prevent attracting flies:
Store your bins away from open windows and doors if possible
Do not leave any food waste uncovered inside the house. Place it immediately into your bin (we suggest that you double-wrap it)
If possible try to keep the bin in shady areas out of direct sunlight
Keep the bin lids closed at all times
Make sure disposable nappies are double-wrapped firmly in bags
Place pet waste in the bin in a securely tied plastic bag
Place newspaper in the bottom of your bin after it has been emptied to soak up any residue from your waste
Using a mild detergent with a fragrance will help to keep flies away from your bin
Look in the Yellow Pages under Cleaning and Maintenance or check the internet for details of local bin cleaning companies
