South Shore Bike Park

Christchurch Borough Council has the potential to create a new and exciting mountain biking park at Chewton Bunny in Highcliffe.

North Shore

Christchurch Borough Council is proposing to bring aspects of the popular North Shore sport to the South Shore of Chewton Bunny, proving facilities for mountain bikers of all ages and abilities.

Typically North Shore style facilities include:

  • Elevated wooden tracks and trails
  • Interconnected natural rock and log obstacles
  • Pump tracks with earth berms

The South Shore proposal aims to channel informal and potentially hazardous bike use into an exciting, safe and challenging new bike park. Please see the adjacent thumbnail photographs to get a feel for the type of facility proposed.

Area improvements

The South Shore proposal is not only about mountain biking but improving the whole area for all different user groups. The council aim to improve the area for recreation, allowing all current activities to continue to take place within a safe environment.

The proposal includes:

  • Excavation of old tarmac sections under the grassy open space below the cafe
  • Resurfacing of the main tarmac path through to the cliffs and beach
  • Extending the tarmac path that extends from the cliffs through to Greystones

Public consultation

During the consultation some questions have arisen about the ownership of the area where the proposed development would take place. Until the ownership questions have been resolved the council has put the decision on whether to go ahead with the proposals on hold.

The council will be looking to resolve the ownership issues as quickly as possible so that a decision can be made on whether or not the matter can be considered by the Community Services Committee in due course.
