Christchurch Supplementary Planning Guidance
Supplementary planning guidance provides additional information to help in the interpretation of Christchurch Local Plan policies for specific sites or issues.
Christchurch Borough Council has adopted a number of non-statutory guidance documents on a variety of matters. The content of these documents is too detailed for inclusion in the Local Plan and they therefore supplement adopted Local Plan policies.
The Local Development Scheme Borough of Christchurch Local Development Scheme sets out (at Annex B) which Supplementary Planning Guidance documents will be retained to support saved policies of the Christchurch Borough Local Plan and which will be deleted.
Current Supplementary Planning Guidance comprises the following:
- Amusement Centres & Arcades Policy 1986
- Granny Annexe - Procedure for Planning Considerations 1999
- Business Activities from Home - A Users Guide 1999
- Designing for Accessibility - An Essential Guide for Public Buildings 2000
- You and Your Listed Building - Advisory Notes 2000
- Conservation Areas - Advisory Notes 2000
- Development Related Travel Plans 2005 (Dorset County Council)
- Christchurch Borough-wide Character Assessment
The Character Assessment aims to help identify and protect the identity of the borough through a comprehensive assessment of urban and landscape character areas. Guidance is set out regarding the capacity of areas to accommodate new development and their unique sensitivity to change.
- Christchurch conservation area appraisals and management plans
Christchurch Council is required to conduct periodic appraisals of the borough's 12 conservation areas to ensure that the essential character of the town is protected.

The Development and Planning Brief prepared for the former Magistrates Court site, police station and adjoining land at Barrack Road and Bargates in Christchurch, adopted in November 2003.

This Supplementary Planning Guidance was produced in February 2005. It sets out the requirements of national and local planning policy to help people seeking planning consent for changes to shopfronts and aims to expand on Local Plan policy (and its successor) by setting out the basic principles of good shopfront and advertisement design.
- Christchurch Town Centre Strategy
The Town Centre Strategy aims to clarify a vision for the development of Christchurch Town Centre over the next 20 years. It provides a framework to manage future changes while protecting the range of high quality heritage aspects. The Strategy was adopted in November 2003.
