Young carers - support and advice
Who is a young carer? Do you look after or help a parent? Is this because they are ill, disabled or have problems with drugs, alcohol or their mental health?
Young carers sometimes need to:
Provide practical help around the home, like shopping, housework, cooking
Help a parent get up, wash and dress or move around
Help with some nursing care like giving medication or lifting
Keep an eye on a parent or try and cheer them up
If this sounds like you, you may also:
Worry about the person you care for and what's happening when you are away from them
Have to do things for yourself which would normally be done by your mum or dad
Find things difficult at school
Miss out on having fun with others
Feel lonely and need someone to talk to who understands
Here at Dorset County Council Children's Services we have Young Carers Support Workers who understand what being a young carer is all about and who can help you and your family.
You can also ask for help and information from:
Teachers or lecturers
School or college nurses
Someone at your place of worship
Education welfare officers
Youth club leaders
Your local doctor, district nurse or health visitor
Community nurse
Library assistants
Young people's advice and information centres
Social workers
