Local Housing Allowance changes from April 2012 and April 2013

In the June 2011 Emergency Budget the government announced their intention to uprate Local Housing Allowance rates by reference to the Consumer Price Index from April 2013.

Details of the uprating were included in the Benefits Uprating Statement on Tuesday 6 December as follows:

  • From April 2012, freezing Local Housing Allowance rates.  This will end the monthly uprating of Local Housing Allowance rates and bring the system in line with the uprating of other pensions and benefits.
  • From April 2013, Local Housing Allowance rates will be set at the lower of the previous annual rate uprated by the September 2012 Consumer Price Index inflation or the thirtieth percentile of local rents.
