Courses for 2012-2013

Primary School Libraries: getting started

Would you like to feel more confident with the basic skills required to run a library for pupils aged 5 to 11? Do you feel that your library could be more effective ...or more fun?

Date: Wednesday 7 November 2012 (9.30am to 4.00pm)

Aim of the course: to explore the role of school libraries and cost-effective ways to run them successfully.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • More understanding of the role of the library in a primary phase school
  • Ideas for making the library accessible and attractive
  • Strategies for supporting pupil's reading skills and enjoyment in the library
  • Knowledge about library budgets, and about selecting and buying library resources
  • Greater awareness of issue systems and how to use them
  • More confidence in managing the school library

The trainer will provide plenty of opportunities for delegates to raise concerns about their own libraries and find solutions.

The course is supported by very useful handouts to keep for future reference.

The School Library and social networking

Date: Wednesday 6 February 2013 (9.30am to 4.00pm)

Venue: The IT Suite, First Floor, Bovington Middle School (to be confirmed)

Facebook, Twitter, Ning...these are almost forbidden words in schools and the sites are often blocked, and yet they can provide a rich, vibrant learning experience for students:

  • stories can be written using Twitter
  • Facebook can be used to explore characters
  • Ning can be used to set up a community writing project and you can involve schools all over the world

and all of these things can be achieved safely and at no risk to pupils.

This training day will explore ways to exploit social media in the library for teaching and learning with a focus on literacy - it will give practical suggestions for ways in which entering into the online world in the library can help to excite students about reading and writing.

Social media can also be used as a source of valuable, free continuing social and professional development and this will be included during the course.

There will be a collaborative element to the session so smart phones, iPads etc. are welcome!

Fiction Up-date

Date: Wednesday 13 March 2013 (9.30am to 12.30pm)

This session will introduce a range of good quality recently published fiction suitable for students in Year 6 and above.

The choice of titles will range from those by popular, established authors to recent award winners and debut novels by authors to watch.

The session is a useful way to keep your knowledge of young adult / teen fiction up-to-date and the list of titles provided can be used as a shopping list to inject some new stock into your collection.

Titles covered in the session can be ordered via the SLS Book Purchase Scheme at a discounted price (average 22%). Details for schools new to this scheme will be provided at the session, a School Library Service membership is not required.

To book: email or phone 01258 451151

Further courses may be arranged during the year - schools will be sent details by email, and information will be posted on the School Library Service website.
