Public events at the Ancient Technology Centre (ATC)

The Ancient Technology Centre in Cranborne offers a range of opportunities for the general public including open days, public courses, storytelling and musical events.

Open days in 2015

The Ancient Technology Centre has been providing exciting hands-on learning experiences to schools and other groups for over 25 years. We have developed a series of open days that are designed to give members of the general public the opportunity to come and explore the site, learn about our historical past and participate in some ancient crafts and skills.

Sunday 3 May: Dark Ages Day - The ATC delves into the Dark Ages exploring our Anglo Saxon and Viking heritage. As we focus on rebuilding our Saxon sunken-feature Grubenhaus, visitors will be able try out first hand, some of the crafts and skills which were part of everyday life as Anglo Saxons and Vikings.

Sunday 26 July: Experimental Archaeology Day - (Part of the Festival of British Archaeology 2015) A day focussed exclusively on experimental archaeology in action, with real experimentation and interesting talks and presentations.  There will also be fun activities for family participation.

Sunday  4 October: Harvest Day - A celebration of food - gathering in the apples, hedgerow fruits, and crops for winter and making foodstuffs and preserves to tide us through the winter months.  Visitors can bring their own apples and pears to press into fresh juice on our Roman-style fruit press, learn the process of making fruit leathers and jams, soft and hard cheeses and salting and preserving meat as our ancestors have done.
