N3: Nature/Network/Neighbourhood is a new Dorset Design and Heritage Forum initiative in collaboration with the Environment Theme Group for Dorset.
Aims of N3
It aims to address areas of concern that affect both the built and natural environment in Dorset, and particularly in locations where there are issues concerning future sustainability and the conservation of the environment. It will address these through a common belief that a creative approach to public space can provide a valuable arena for exploration of these issues. N3 aims to create a long term legacy with the creation of innovative art and design in public places throughout the whole of Dorset that:
Stimulates a greater sense of local ownership of Dorset's built and natural environment
Supports neighbourhood activism to improve public places and spaces for the benefit of all
Demonstrates the value of cross-sector collaboration - public, private and civic sectors - for public art projects
In practice N3 are delivering six projects over the next two years:
The production of guidance advising groups developing community led planning documents how to engage with culture and use the skills of creative practitioners within the planning process. The completed document N3 Creativity in Community Led Planning in Dorset (pdf, 3Mb) (opens in a new window) is now available to download.
Development of networks and skills through a series of related events.
The involvement of an artist/creative facilitator on the development of Gillingham Neighbourhood Plan, North Dorset
An artist commission funded by Dorchester Business Improvement District and linked to highways development in Dorchester town centre
A project to investigate ecological mitigation for housing development through animal architecture (such as bat/bird boxes)
A series of new creative interpretation/signage to be commissioned for sites managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust
