Children's Services - Dorset County Council

The Children's Services directorate provides support to meet the needs of children and young people in Dorset, and their families.

Outcomes for children

The following outcomes underpin every aspect of the work within Children's Services;

1. Children and young people will be safe wherever they are

2. Families will be resilient, develop positive relationships and have good futures

3. Children and young people will be confident and successful learners who can achieve personal success as they grow into adulthood

Learning and Inclusion

Head of Service: Phil Minns

  • Improvement support for early years settings, schools and Governors
  • Support for children who are disabled and those with special educational needs (SEN)
  • Educational psychology and behaviour support service
  • Children's Centres
  • Supporting young people aged 16+ to stay in education and training
  • School transport
  • Alternative education (e.g learning centres) and home education
  • School attendance and exclusions
  • Outdoor Education, Music Service, Duke of Edinburgh Award and Treats Toy Library

Family Support

  • Looked after children (children in care) and care leavers
  • Support for foster carers and recruitment of new foster carers
  • Support for adoptive parents and those considering adopting
  • Adolescent support services
  • Youth clubs and projects
  • Assistance in identifying agencies best suited to meet the needs of children, young people and families
  • Supporting agencies to use the Common Assessment Framework to meet needs
