Dog Control Orders in Christchurch

Following consultation with local residents, parish councils and local landowners, Christchurch Borough Council has made four new Dog Control Orders:

  • The Fouling of Land by Dogs (Christchurch) Order 2013
  • Dogs Exclusion (Christchurch) Order 2013
  • Dogs on Leads (Christchurch) Order 2013
  • Dogs on Leads by Direction (Christchurch) Order 2013

The Orders came into force on 17 June 2013. Failure to comply with the orders can lead to a fixed penalty of £75 (reduced to £50 if paid within 7 days) or to a maximum fine of £1,000 if taken to court.

The Fouling of Land by Dogs (Christchurch) Order 2013

This order makes it an offence for anyone to fail to remove dog faeces deposited by a dog, for which he or she is responsible, from any land which is open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment) within the Borough of Christchurch.

Land placed at the disposal of the Forestry Commissioners under section 39(1) of the Forestry Act 1967 is excluded from this order. A copy of the order can be downloaded below, together with maps showing the excluded Forestry Commission land.

The Dogs Exclusion (Christchurch) Order 2013

This order makes it an offence for anyone to take a dog for which he or she is responsible onto, or permit the dog to enter, or to remain on any land within the Borough of Christchurch which is an enclosed children's play area, and from 1 May to 30th September each year the beach between Avon Beach and Friars Cliff Beach and the beach between groynes H4 and H8.

The Dogs on Leads (Christchurch) Order 2013

This order makes it an offence for anyone not to keep a dog for which he or she is responsible for on a lead when on land at the cultivated grounds and tea rooms at Highcliffe Castle, Druitt Gardens, Christchurch Priory Gardens, Convent Walk, Jumpers Cemetery and from 1 May to 30 September each year, between Avon Beach and Friars Cliff when on the promenade, the cliff steps and cliff pathways.

The Dogs on Leads by Direction (Christchurch) Order 2013

This order makes it an offence not to put, and keep, a dog on a lead of not more than 1 metre when directed to do so by an authorised officer of the Council if such restraint is reasonably necessary to prevent a nuisance or behaviour by the dog, likely to cause annoyance or disturbance to any other persons, or the worrying or disturbance of any animal or bird when on any land which is open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment) within the Borough of Christchurch.

Land placed at the disposal of the Forestry Commissioners under section 39(1) of the Forestry Act 1967 is excluded from this order. A copy of the order can be downloaded below, together with maps showing the excluded Forestry Commission land.
