What is the Dorset Safeguarding Adults Board?

The Dorset Safeguarding Adults Board is a board made up of senior representatives from all the statutory agencies, including the County Council, Health Trusts, Police, Dorset Probation, Dorset Fire and Rescue service, Ambulance service, District and Borough Councils and the voluntary sector, including representation for people with learning disability and older people. It has been established to improve practice which protects and safeguards adults in vulnerable circumstances in Dorset. The board meets quarterly, and their work includes:

  • Developing strategies to reduce risk and prevent harm occurring to adults in vulnerable situations, as well as reacting effectively when it happens
  • Ensuring national policy, guidance and best practice standards are being adhered to locally
  • Determining local policy and procedures 
  • Co-ordinating activity between agencies 
  • Facilitating joint training 
  • Ensuring good communication with the public and raising awareness about how to recognise and refer concerns about vulnerable adults being harmed 
  • Monitoring and reviewing standards in safeguarding practices 
  • Developing ways of working, which will improve ability to support Dorset residents across the community to live a life free from abuse 
  • Learning from lessons where people have not been adequately protected

How does the board work?

The Safeguarding Adults Board works with other partnerships promoting the safety of residents.

The Dorset wide Multi-Agency Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures (pdf, 1Mb) (opens in a new window) sets out the locally adopted procedures used by Dorset County Council, Bournemouth Borough Council, the Borough of Poole and all the member agencies. 

The Safeguarding Adults Board produces quarterly reports, an annual Business Plan (pdf, 70kb) (opens in a new window) and an Annual Report (pdf, 270kb) (opens in a new window) on how this was delivered. It reports to the Overview and Scrutiny Committees and Local Strategic Partnerships.

Promotion of adult safeguarding is being developed through public information leaflets and in numerous other ways including DVDs, multiple awareness raising training courses, workshops etc.
